Psalm 19:7

Moments in the Bible

Psalm 19

“The Golden Age”

It seems to have been a golden age of hearing God speak. Noah and Abraham received direct instructions from God …

build an ark, Noah. (Genesis 6:13) Leave your country, Abraham. (Genesis 12:1-4a) Years later, the twelve disciples

seemed to have an even greater opportunity … they walked and talked with Jesus, God Himself.

They learned directly from His words and observed His every action for about forty-two months.

It seems these individuals had a distinct advantage in hearing God's guidance.

Although some were blessed to hear God’s audible voice, others received guidance by the Lord

through their circumstances. People like Joseph, Ruth, Esther, David, Daniel were stationed as point guards in God’s plan.

Taken into captivity, thrust into loss or grief, anointed for a task they never asked for, they responded in long obedience

and God used them to move His redemption plan forward. Hearing and knowing God’s guidance goes

beyond our personal comfort to participating in His kingdom purposes. We observe their stories

in the Bible from a bird’s eye view, those who either heard God’s audible voice or obediently yielded

to God through their situations. We see that they experienced God working for their good, the good of families

and nations, and for His own glory. However, we must not forget that they had to walk it out by faith

before the finale happened. So must we.

I admit that sometimes I wish God would just verbally say to me, “This is My plan … this is where you fit into it …

this is precisely what I want you to do or say.” I think this is a secret desire of many who follow the Lord.

God has a better plan for us, though, a plan with no limits. The Lord put into motion the golden age

of receiving His guidance when Jesus ascended into heaven. His plan is not confined to a small circle of disciples

at a specific time in history in a small geographical area like Israel. Instead, God has made

His presence and guidance available to all around the world through all generations who says “yes” to His invitation

to follow Him. Yes, Noah and Abraham heard God’s audible voice, Esther and Ruth were led through their circumstances,

and the disciples were firsthand witnesses to Jesus’ life, death, resurrection, and ascension.

But Jesus gave a promise for those who would never hear His audible voice, see or touch Him this side of heaven:

“…Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” John 20:29b  What is the blessing?

The “golden age” of hearing God’s voice is now. God has given us many gifts and promises,

but two stand out as avenues of the blessing Jesus promised:

His written Word and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit,

His “thus says the Lord” and His “Spirit Who leads us into His truth.”

Consider & Respond

Selah these scripture passages about God’s Word and His Holy Spirit.

God speaking about His Word through Isaiah the prophet (Isaiah 55:10-11) ...

For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and do not return there,

but water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater,

so shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void,

but is shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.

Jesus speaking about the Holy Spirit (John 14:16-17, 23, 26a) ...

And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever –

the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him;

but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you…If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word;

and My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make Our home with him.

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things...

What do you understand about hearing from God based on these two passages of scripture?

What response do you think the Lord is stirring in you? What will you do?

Let Us Pray

Lord God, lead me into Your truth and guide me continuously into Your will and ways.

Help me to rely on You, Holy Spirit, to help me be perceptive and discerning

about God’s will even though I do not hear His audible voice.

Train me to be a recipient, receptacle, and revealer of what You are unfolding to me. Amen

Moments in the Bible

1 Corinthians 12

“Snowflakes”

Several calls to prayer have been issued to the church to pray for our nation and our leaders.

Thankfully, strategies for prayer are also being offered. One strategy is entitled “A Minute to Win It,”

presented through Tom and Lynnie Harlow. It involves Christians praying

one minute every day at 9:00 p.m. (their local time.)

The backdrop to this call and strategy of prayer emerges from Britain’s history during World War 2.

During the period of September 7, 1940 to May 11, 1941, Germany perpetrated sustained bombing attacks

every night on cities like London. London was bombed for 57 consecutive nights at the beginning of the barrage.

However, during and despite the nightly terror blitz by the Nazi air force,

when "Big Ben," the bell inside the clock tower in the Palace of Westminster began to chime at

9:00 each evening, Britain’s citizens paused and prayed while hunkered down in their shelters.

Families and individuals cried out to God for their beleaguered nation.

Many have attributed Britain’s preservation and victory to this nightly prayer.

At times, it seems that we are being bombed with evil and ungodliness in our own country,

that there is a relentless assault on good and truth, that a war is being waged on our children, families, and citizens.

When I read about the 9 p.m. "Minute to Win It" call and strategy of prayer, I wondered how one minute

from one person – myself – could make a difference in my own nation. A memory came to mind.

During an early January 2026 snow day in Colorado, I came across an article about snowflakes.

The science behind their formation is fascinating. However, a single fact is most intriguing: each snowflake has six sides

but not one snowflake is identical to any other (like our fingerprints.) I then read a thoughtful observation:

“A snowflake is one of God’s most fragile creations but look what they can do when they stick together!”

For anyone who lives in a region where it snows or who has enjoyed visiting when the snow floated from the sky,

the message is evident. Snow provides water, blankets the landscape with frosty beauty, is a recreational slide

for skiers, snowboarders, and sledders. However, snow can also be dangerous and destructive –

treacherous driving conditions, avalanches.  Snow is incredibly necessary and valuable, but it is not to be taken for granted.

Some estimates say there is potentially billions of snowflakes in a square foot of snow. God is prolific, isn’t He?

He can multiply the impact of snowflakes on the earth, and He can multiply the impact of one-minute prayers

voiced by multiple, uniquely created individuals who pray consistently every day.

Yep … there are difficult and even downright mean people in the world who

derogatorily label Christians as “snowflakes.” I simply respond, “thank you … you’re right!”

This “snowflake” is setting her alarm for 9:00 each evening and praying to the Creator of snowflakes for my country.

Will you join me?

Consider & Respond

Will you pray for your country?

Set your alarm for 9:00 p.m.

Step away into a private place with the Lord and pray for what Holy Spirit puts on your heart.

Reset your alarm for tomorrow night.

1 Timothy 2:1-6

Therefore, I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men,

for kings and all who are in authority that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.

For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and

to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men,

the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time…

Let Us Pray

Lord God, You hold success in store for the upright and are a shield to those whose walk is blameless.

You guard the course of the just and protect the way of Your faithful ones.

Help me as an individual to live a life that pleases You.

Help us to corporately take up the mantle of prayer. Hear our petitions for our nation and her people,

that she will rise to the standard of Your holiness and fulfill Your purpose for her existence. Amen

Matthew 24

“Come, Lord Jesus – 3 Day Summary”

In our previous three days, we looked at two books in our Bibles …

the final book, Revelation, and the first Book, Genesis.

For us today, let’s pause and recall the last three days of devotions and draw an important connection.

Day 14 Summary – “Selah Sabbath Rest – Worship” (Revelation chapter 4)

Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures,

and the elders, and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand,

and thousands of thousands, saying with one voice: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain

to receive power and riches and wisdom; and strength and honor and glory and blessing!”

Revelation 5:11-12

Perhaps a definition may help. The word “worship” means “to kiss forward” which implies

bowing down and kissing the hand or feet of a superior….We can kiss His holy hands and feet with our worship.

“Revelation Song.” Picture it, ponder it, praise through it. Worship God unhurriedly.

Day 15 Summary – “Unveiled” (Revelation chapter 1)

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord,

“who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” Revelation 1:8

Exiled on the Isle of Patmos for his faith, … [The Apostle John] received a new assignment from the Lord …

scribe for the Revelation of Jesus Christ.

In one single chapter of the Bible … Revelation chapter 1 … the Lord reveals touching

and powerful descriptions which help us to worship God for our entire life!

Day 16 Summary – “In the Waiting” – (Genesis chapters 7 & 8)

“The fountains of the deep and the windows of heaven were also stopped,

and the rain from heaven was restrained. Genesis 8:2

Finally at the 7 month mark, “the ark rested … on the mountains of Ararat.” Land!

But it was not yet time to fling open the ramp and exit…

God was drying the earth and preparing it for habitation, but that process took time.

It is obedience to stay until God makes it clear your season to go has come.

It is also obedience to consider how your decision impacts others…

It is equally obedience not to remain inside the familiar walls of the “ark” when God

has dried the land, prepared a place for you,., and has said “go.”

Consider & Respond

From Revelation chapters 1 and 2, select scriptures that paint a picture for you of your

mighty Redeemer and Lover of Your Soul, Jesus Christ. Consider writing what touches your heart and putting

the information in a place where you can read and worship the Lord.

In the single day we spent in Genesis chapters 7 and 8, we considered what it means to be “In the Waiting.”

As Noah was “in the waiting” in the ark, he was actively looking and listening for the Lord’s guidance.

All of us are “in the waiting” for the return of the One we read about in Revelation chapters 1 and 4.

Search the word “wait” or “waiting” in your Bible and gather insights on how

to wait for God’s guidance in this life and how to actively wait His return.

Let Us Pray

Lord, our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

And so we say, “Come Lord Jesus, Come.” Amen

Moments in the Bible

Genesis 7 & 8

“In The Waiting”

“The fountains of the deep and the windows of heaven were also stopped,

and the rain from heaven was restrained.”   Genesis 8:2

Can you imagine the moment for Noah and his family when the wild waves that had

rocked the ark 40 days and nights grew calm? Beneath the ark, rage from the deep had spewed

underground water volcanoes for more than five weeks, and now a soothing tranquility.

Can you envision when it was suddenly silent on the gopher wood instead of torrents

of unrelenting rain pounding the sides and roof of the ark?

Hope surely surged in their souls! But it was not time to disembark … not yet, and not for a while.

Five months had passed – 150 days – and only now the water was receding since God flooded the earth

and destroyed all living things. It had truly been a sad season, but also a season of cleansing.

Finally, at the seven-month mark, “…the ark rested … on the mountains of Ararat.”  Land!

But it was not yet time to fling open the ramp and exit. Mount Ararat is almost 17,000 feet tall

and they were perched at the top of it. What was below? Water.

God was drying the earth and preparing it for habitation, but that process took time.

Yes, the ark was no longer swaying, and sea sickness was no longer a problem,

but patience and waiting … that could be challenging.

Noah sent out a dove from the ark to explore. On her second flight she returned with a plucked olive leaf

in her mouth, a sign of dry land! And yet Noah waited. I’m certain he was as anxious as his seven family members

to put the soles of his feet on solid ground and release the animals to forage for themselves, but he waited.

One last test … the dove sent out a third time, and this time she never returned.

Only then ...

“Noah removed the covering of the ark and looked, and indeed the surface of the ground was dry…

Then God spoke to Noah saying, ‘Go out of the ark, you and your wife, and your sons and your sons’ wives with you.

Bring out with you every living thing of all flesh that is with you; birds and cattle and every creeping thing

that creeps on the earth, so that they may abound on the earth, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth.’”  Genesis 8:14-17

Noah had waited.  Even when waiting was long and circumstances outside the ark seemed ready for habitation,

he continued to remain in God’s waiting room.  Although he could have, he did not prematurely touch

the seal on the door of the ark until he had received the “go” from God.

And then ... only then ... he went. (Genesis 8:18)

Consider & Respond

Do you feel like you are in God’s waiting room? Maybe He has sealed you in the ark of His presence until

a place is prepared for you to inhabit. Noah’s story teaches us that God can be trusted to prepare the details

for your future and He will make it clear to you when it is time to step down the ramp and into the tomorrow

He has planned. He is faithful like that.

It is obedience to stay until God makes it clear your season to go has come.

It is also obedience to consider how your decision impacts others.

Noah had seven family members and an ark full of living creatures to care for.

It is equally obedience not to remain inside the familiar walls of the “ark”

when God has dried the land, prepared a place for you, and has said “go.”

Are you in a time of decision making? What questions do you have about knowing God’s will?

Present your questions to God in prayer. Study His Word. Seek Godly counsel.

Hearing the voice of God may feel challenging.

Search these scriptures. How do they help you to clear your heart and know God’s voice?

Philippians 4:4-8, Jeremiah 33:1-3, Romans 12:12, Isaiah 32:17-20

Let Us Pray

Lord God, You are my rock and my fortress. But as for me, I trust in You, O Lord;

I say, "You are my God."  My times are in Your hand.

Oh, how great is Your goodness, which You have laid up for those who fear You,

which You have prepared for those who trust in You...

I will be of good courage, and You shall strengthen my heart for I hope in the Lord.  Amen

Moments in the Bible

Revelation 1

“Unveiled”

The Book of Revelation is a mystery in some ways. The future always is!

We are blessed because Holy Spirit unveils God’s truth to us. Let's thank Him for the Book of Revelation.

The Apostle John was the only apostle among Jesus' faithful originals who died a natural death.

Exiled to the Isle of Patmos for his faith, he may have thought this was his burial ground.

Instead, he received a new assignment from the Lord ... scribe for the Revelation of Jesus Christ.

In the first verse of the Revelation, John makes it very clear what this book is about:

“The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants –

things which must shortly take place.” (Rev 1:1a) Before moving on too quickly, let’s digest these first words.

Notice that the verse says that it is revelation which God gave Jesus to show to His servants.

This is God Himself intentionally unveiling prophetic information to benefit His servants … to benefit us!

Jesus executed the plan and imparted this information to John. Of John it is said:

“And He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John, who bore witness

to the word of God, and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, to all things that he saw.” (Rev 1:1b-2)

What did John see?

It has been said of Jesus that He is "indescribable," and truly our vocabulary

can never be vast enough to honor Him as He deserves!

However, in one chapter in the Bible ... Revelation chapter 1 ... God reveals touching and

powerful descriptions which help us to worship God for our entire life!

Today, selah John’s scribed words. We will look at chapter 1, particularly verses 4-8.

These verses unveil fifteen aspects of Jesus we can meditate on, worship, and praise our Lord God.

Furthermore, as you complete chapter 1, you will feel as though you are

in the very throne room of God beholding the Creator God, the Mighty One Who redeemed you!

Selah ...

Grace to you and peace from (1) Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are

before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, the (2) faithful witness, the (3) firstborn from the dead,

and the (4) ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who (5) loved us and (6) washed us from our sins in His own blood,

and has (7) made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be (8) glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen

Behold, (9) He is coming with clouds, and (10) every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him,

and (11) all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so. Amen.

 (12) “I am the (13) Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord,

(14) “who is and who was and who is to come, (15) the Almighty.”

Consider & Respond

In Revelation chapter 1 verses 4 through 8, there are 15 highlights underlined describing Jesus’.

Make a personal list of these 15.

As you make your list of the underlined attributes,

pause and reflect and worship the Lord for His goodness.

Be in no hurry.

Is there one attribute in particular that awakens your understanding about God Who loves you?

Study that attribute more thoroughly to deepen your comprehension.

Let Us Pray

Lord Jesus may the understanding and insight into Who You are and what You’ve done

transform me into a relentless worshipper who loves and worships You unrestrained.

John was used to scribe Your message; show me in what way You want to use me

to bring forth Your message to the world. Amen

Revelation 4

“Selah Sabbath Rest - Worship”

Have you pondered what it means to truly worship the Lord? Most of our church services begin with what we call “worship”

where we corporately lift our voices and sing our praises to God.  It is such a beautiful tradition

and one I believe blesses the heart of God … IF … it is in spirit and in truth. (John 4:24)

We want our personal worship to be genuine and passionate! We want to bless God's heart.

We want to draw nearer to HIm.  Holy Spirit, lead us into greater understanding.

Perhaps a definition may help. The word “worship” means “to kiss forward” which implies

bowing down and kissing the hand or feet of a superior. As we desire to draw nearer to God (James 4:8),

we realize the deep privilege it is to bow down to God, and so we kneel and even prostrate ourselves.

We would gladly kiss His hand or feet if He were before us in the flesh.

We can kiss His holy hands and feet with our worship.

There are several invitations from God in our Bible. One is in Hebrews 4:16 where we are invited to

come boldly into His throne room of grace to obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

We are blessed to be in God's presence in prayer and worship, but sometimes words escape us.

We want to offer deep reverent submission, bow our hearts, knees, lives, all we are …

we want to humbly pay homage to Him ... worship Him.

Perhaps like me, you would like to offer your King of kings more than just "thank You Jesus"

(although He receives this simple expression of gratitude spoken in spirit and in truth.)

However, we may feel like we have so much more locked up in our soul and not enough dictionary to express it.

Today as I took my pup on a short walk, I was talking with the Lord about this. It seemed the Holy Spirit

brought to my remembrance a powerful worship song, “Revelation Song.”

As I hummed it and sang the words I could recall by memory, my heart swelled with love for God, humility as I walked with Him.

The revelation of His goodness deepened as I honored Him and my "thank You Jesus" had more texture, felt unrushed, genuine.

I sensed God's tender smile, not of approval, but affirmation that He had received my worship.

Perhaps today you would like to worship the Lord with these same lyrics. First released in 2006, “Revelation Song”

seems to have anointing oil flow over and through each line. God bless author, Jennie Lee Riddle, for writing words that

give me … us … a fresh expression of what our minds and hearts so want to say to our magnificent God.

Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, holy, holy is He. We sing a new song to Him who sits on Heaven’s mercy seat.

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord, God Almighty who was, and is, and is to come.

With all creation I sing, praise to the King of kings; You are my everything and I will adore You.

Clothed in rainbows of living color, flashes of lightning, rolls of thunder.

Blessing and honor, strength and glory and power be to You, the only wise King.

Holy, holy holy is the Lord, God Almighty Who was and is and is to come.

With all creation I sing, praise to the King of kings; You are my everything and I will adore You.

Filled with wonder, awestruck wonder at the mention of Your name, Jesus;

Your name is power, breath, and living water; such a marvelous mystery.

Oh holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty who was, and is, and is to come.

With all creation I sing, praise to the King of kings;

You are my everything, and I will adore You; and I will adore You. ¯

“3:16 Scriptures” (Part 2)

I had been taught that sheep were passive and dumb. However, recently I learned that sheep are actually quite intelligent,

have strong memories and are emotionally complex. Ewes form strong bonds with their lambs soon after birth,

and teach their babies to follow the flock. One unique thing I learned is that they were created with rectangular pupils

so their field of vision is between 270 and 320 degrees; this means they see everything around them

without turning their head except for what is directly behind them.

Sheep have a strong sense of smell and have scent glands on their face and hooves that help them

communicate among themselves. For safety, sheep have an urge to flock together and when they are scared,

their instincts drive them to flee together as a group. I appreciate that God built these instincts and responses into sheep.

Yes, they can be vulnerable to predators such as coyotes, bobcats, cougars, and even bears and eagles.

But an attentive shepherd keeps their flock safe from becoming prey.

One beautiful thing: sheep recognize the face of their shepherd and know His voice.

Listen close today to what the voice of your Good Shepherd is speaking to you

as you “selah” the remaining “3:16 Scriptures.” These verses are good pasture for us to graze.

“3:16” Topics: God’s Instructions, Strength, Love, Mystery, Diary, Peace

Colossians 3:16 – God’s Instructions

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another

in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Ephesians 3:16 – God’s Strength

…that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory,

to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man.

1 John 3:16 – God’s Love

By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

1 Timothy 3:16 – God’s Mystery

And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness:  God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit,

seen by angels, preached among the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up in glory.

Malachi 3:16 – God’s Diary

Then those who feared the Lord spoke to one another, and the Lord listened and heard them;

so, a book of remembrance was written before Him for those who fear the Lord and who meditate on His name.

2 Thessalonians 3:16 – God’s Peace

Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace always in every way. The Lord be with you all.

“3:16 Scriptures” (Part 1)

In the mid-20th century, an evangelism method was crafted by American Baptist pastor Jack Hyles

and has equipped many to share the pathway to salvation in Jesus Christ.

It is known as the "Roman's Road," and uses the Book of Romans to explain

the plan of salvation. (Romans 3:23, 6:23, 5:8, 10:9-10, 10:13.)

Lately, I have noticed an interesting pattern in the Bible that provides insights for those who are searching

to know God or grow deeper in their understanding and walk with Him …  the “3:16” scriptures.

These are verses whose Bible address include the numbers “3:16” such as “John 3:16,” “Colossians 3:16”, etc.

Today and tomorrow, we will explore a total of twelve verses with the “3:16” address.

Let us observe and absorb the truth God conveys to us in these scriptures.

If you want to dig deeper into the context of these verses, read the full chapter.

“3:16” Topics: God’s Word, Might, Plan, Revealed, Baptism, Temple

2 Timothy 3:16 - God's Word

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine,

for reproof for correction, for instruction in righteousness …

Joel 3:16 – God’s Might

The Lord will roar from Zion, and utter His voice from Jerusalem; the heavens and earth will shake;

but the Lord will be a shelter for His people, and the strength of the children of Israel.

John 3:16 – God’s Plan

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son,

that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

2 Corinthians 3:16 – God Revealed

Nevertheless, when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.

Luke 3:16 – God’s Baptism

John answered, saying to all, “I indeed baptize you with water;

but One mightier than I is coming whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose.

He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Consider & Respond

Consider writing these verses and placing them in a location where you can review them often.

Strengthen your insight and equip your faith by cross referencing and studying

the historical context and the lessons and instructions contained in each scripture.

Let Us Pray

Lord Jesus, thank You for providing a written record to guide us into knowing and living Your truth.

Thank you for pulling back the veil so we can behold the glory of the Lord and be transformed into His same image.

Your right hand and Your holy arm have gained You the victory!   Amen

Simple Selah - Scripture Pondering

Death once held us in its grip, and by the blunder of one man,

death reigned as king over humanity. But now, how much more are we

held in the grip of grace and continue reigning as kings in life,

enjoying our regal freedom through the gift of perfect righteousness

in the one and only Jesus, the Messiah.

“The Grip of Grace – 3 Day Summary”

In some religions, faith + works = salvation. As Christians, we know there are no good works

that we can do to save ourselves. Alistair Begg demonstrates this beautifully in our day 8 devotion.

We are compelled by love to do good works … we show our faith by the works we do.

But our works are not the foundation of our salvation. (James 2:18b) Only God's grace!

Prayers that this 3 Day Summary affirms to you that you, dear one, are truly in the grip of God's amazing grace!

Reviewing the scriptures on Day 9 will continue to strengthen your faith and understanding of grace.

Day 8 Summary - “Grace Alone, Faith Alone, Christ Alone”

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves;

it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

Ephesians 2:8-9

“Think about the thief on the cross … I can’t wait to find that fellow one day to ask him,

“How did that shake out for you?” Because you were cussing the guy out with your friend.

You’ve never been in a Bible study. You never got baptized …

You didn’t know a thing about church membership and yet … you made it. How did you make it?”

… And he said, “The Man on the middle cross said I can come.” (Alistair Begg)

Selah this thought:

“Grace is God giving us what we do not deserve;

Mercy is God withholding what we do deserve.”

Day 9 Summary - “Preaching to Ourselves”

“… without preaching the cross to ourselves, all day and every day,

we will very, very quickly revert to faith plus works as the ground of our salvation.” Alistair Begg

By preaching the Gospel to ourselves each day, our understanding and faith will be deepened and widened.

We will affirm our standing with God and will not be deceived into working harder or living condemned.

Psalm 73:25-26, 28 Whom have I in heaven but You, Lord?

And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You.

My flesh and my heart fail; but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

It is good for me to draw near to God; I have put my trust in the Lord God, that I may declare all Your works. Amen

Day 10 Summary - “Clearly Seen”

Romans 1:20 is a thrilling mystery. How can “invisible attributes be clearly seen?”

How can these attributes be understood by the things that are made?

How does creation show forth His eternal power and Godhead?

Psalm 95:3 For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods.

In His hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to Him.

We can rely on the God Who holds the depths of the earth in the palm of His hands

and is the rightful owner of every mountain peak.

Consider & Respond

Preach the message of grace to yourself.

Prepare a “message of grace” to share as a testimony to others.

Spend time in nature and ponder how wonderful it is that you can

clearly see God’s great love and grace in His creation.

Offer grace and mercy to family, friends, neighbors …

even rude drivers you encounter on the road.

Let Us Pray

When we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly …

but You, Lord God, demonstrates Your own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners,

Christ died for us.

There is no way, Lord, we can give ample thanks to You for this great gift.

Therefore, we do the one thing that makes Jesus’ death worthwhile …

we give You our lives anew and afresh. Amen

“Clearly Seen"

Romans 1:20 is a thrilling mystery. How can “invisible attributes be clearly seen"?

How can these attributes be understood by the things that are made?

How does creation show forth His eternal power and Godhead?

And why?

Here’s one important reason: the Lord wants us to “retain God in our knowledge…" Romans 1:28a

Yesterday we explored about “preaching the Gospel to ourselves”

which is a powerful way to retain God in our knowledge!

Today let us consider how God uses creation to reveal His hidden attributes so we can clearly see Him.

My husband and I are blessed each time we travel US Route 287 north of Lafayette.

To the west is a sight to see! The Colorado high plains collide with the Rocky Mountains,

and it seems the mountains draw the plains upward. What message might we glean from this beautiful sight?

Perhaps that the LORD is the One who lifts my head high, (Psalm 3:3) or the promise that

“Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low.” (Isaiah 40:4)

The hidden attributes may be that God continuously draws us to higher places (higher thoughts, higher ways.)

It may also show us that God knows the plight of our life and

His tender grace and mercy levels the hills and elevates the valleys of our lives.

There are two travel moments with my husband that linger in my memory and demonstrate the attributes of God.

The trip to San Francisco was particularly poignant because my husband had never seen the ocean.

After a full day of driving, we arrived at the beach at dusk;

the sun had already dropped below the horizon when we walked to the shoreline.

I observed Chuck as he watched what he could discern through the shadows of a finished day –

the white caps breaking along the shore, the sound of the power of millions and millions of gallons of water

held back from overtaking us, the smell of salt.

There were no words as he experienced God’s ocean for the first time. Just awe.

Another trip was to the Grand Tetons in Wyoming. We enjoyed the drive as it wound through plains, hills, trees, and road delays.

We kept watching for what we did not know and had no idea what to expect. It seemed as though suddenly, we arrived!

We emerged from the trees, and we were astounded by what unfolded before us! The 13,775 foot high Grand Teton jutted up

from nothing with other smaller peaks following its lead and lakes still and quiet in the valley at its feet.

If the mountain range could speak, it would be praising God with uplifted arms! I think it does!

The Good News is present in God’s creation. When Creator-God separated the land from the sea, He said

‘This far you may come, but no farther, and here your proud waves must stop!” (Job 38:10-11)

We can see God's power and trust the One Who creates and controls.

Or the Grand Tetons … “For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods.

In His hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to Him. (Psalm 95:3)

We can rely on the God Who holds the depths of the earth in the palm of His hands

and is the rightful owner of every mountain peak.

We truly are without excuse if we say we cannot see God.

We must step outside our front door and bask in His wonders or take a drive to oceans or mountains and just be in awe.

Consider & Respond

Spend time outdoors in God’s creation.

If you are able, travel to a distance near or far and consider the wondrous works of God.

What is God speaking to you through His creation? What scriptures come to mind?

Let Us Pray

O Lord, how manifold are Your works! In wisdom you have made them all.

The earth is full of Your possessions … I will sing to the Lord as long as I live;

I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.

May my meditation be sweet to Him; I will be glad in the Lord.

Bless the Lord, O my soul! Praise the Lord! Amen

“Preaching to Ourselves”

Yesterday we read a snippet of a sermon by Scottish-born minister, Alistair Begg,

“The Power and the Message of the Cross.”  The first line quoted in the sermon excerpt was this:

“…without preaching the cross to ourselves, all day and every day, we will

very, very quickly revert to faith plus works as the ground of our salvation.”

At Calvary, Jesus “made intercession for the transgressors.” The word “intercession” means He came between

God’s righteous judgment and us, He bridged the gap between us and God, He pleaded to Father on our behalf.

This is the good news, the Gospel! By preaching the Gospel to ourselves each day,

our understanding and faith will be deepened and widened.

We will affirm our standing with God and will not be deceived into working harder or living condemned.

Gospel Scripture Suggestions to Selah and Preach Aloud to Ourselves Daily

John 3:16 - God’s Love

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever

believes in Him should not perish but shall have everlasting life.

Isaiah 53:6 – Sheep Gone Astray

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way;

and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

Galatians 3:13 – Redemption

Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us

(for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.”)

Isaiah 43:25 – Sin Blotted Out

I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake;

and I will not remember your sins.

Psalm 103:11-12 – Sin Removed

For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward those who fear Him;

as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.

Romans 4:7-8 - Forgiven

Blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.

Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him.

Colossians 1:21-22 - Reconciled

And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works,

yet now He has reconciled in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy,

and blameless, and above reproach in His sight …

Romans 8:1- No Condemnation

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus,

who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

Romans 8:31-32 – God Is For Us

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?

Consider & Respond

A holy hush comes over my soul as I read the Gospel scriptures.

I hope these verses have the same impact on you.

Use the list of nine scriptures as is, edit it, add to it.

Post your Gospel scriptures in a place where you can read them aloud to yourself daily.

Perhaps an index card or on your phone.

Pray Holy Spirit makes these verses more alive in your soul,

that you receive deeper revelation about the finished work of Jesus Christ on your behalf.

Selah this thought:

In the scriptures, we are told “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.”

Romans 10:17

In The Message, the paraphrased version of the Bible, Romans 10:17 reads this way …

“…Before you trust, you have to listen.

But unless Christ’s Word is preached, there’s nothing to listen to.”

Preach to yourself aloud. Remember that faith comes by hearing the Word of God.

Let the Word flow from your mouth into your ears. Listen with your soul.

Let God’s Word dwell in you richly.

Let Us Pray

Ephesians 2:7-9

 Ephesians chapter 2

“Grace Alone, Faith Alone, Christ Alone”

Scottish born minister, Alistair Begg preached a sermon in November 2019 to his congregants

at Parkside Church, Ohio. The teaching is entitled “The Power and the Message of the Cross.”

With a unique approach, Dr. Begg uses the story of the thief on the cross

to clarify that our salvation is

by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.

Pastor Alistair said ...

…without preaching the cross to ourselves, all day and every day,

we will very, very quickly revert to faith plus works as the ground of our salvation …

if you were to die tonight and you were getting entry into heaven, what would you say?

If you answer in the first person, we’ve immediately gone wrong.

“Because I … Because I believed … Because I have faith …

Because I am this … Because I am continuing.”

Loved ones, the only proper answer is in the third person.

“Because He! Because He!”

Think about the thief on the cross … I can’t wait to find that fellow one day to ask him,

“How did that shake out for you?” Because you were cussing the guy out with your friend.

You’ve never been in a Bible study. You never got baptized … You didn’t know a thing

about church membership, and yet … you made it.

How did you make it?”

[At the gate of heaven] … the angel must have said …

“What are you doing?”

 [Thief] “I don’t know.”

“What do you mean you don’t know?”

[Thief] “I don’t know.”

“Excuse me, let me get my supervisor.”

They go get their supervisor angel.

“So just a few questions for you.

First of all, are you clear on the doctrine of justification by faith?”

The guy said, “I’ve never heard of it in my life.”

“And what about the doctrine of scripture?”

This guy is just staring – and eventually, in frustration, [the supervisor] says,

“On what basis are you here?”

And he said, “The Man on the middle cross said I can come.”

That is the only answer. That is the only answer.

Consider & Respond

How does Alistair Begg’s story touch your heart?

Does it awaken an insight in you that sets you free from

striving to be good enough to be accepted by God or to make it into heaven?

Today is a pause, a “sabbath rest” from information and inspiration.

Have you ever wanted to stop … do nothing …

spend time with someone you love with no agenda?

Today can be that day ...

a pause to “Simply Selah.”

It is a good day to think about God …

to think about what it means to you to be loved by the King of glory.

To lift your head, your eyes, your heart to Him.

No agenda. Just listening, love, gratitude.

Perhaps you will perceive more clearly the answer to the question …

“Who is this King of glory?”

Who is the Lord in your personal life, in your family, community, church, work, world?

On your “Selah Sabbath Rest,” perhaps you might soak in the ten bountiful verses of Psalm 24.

Or, if you choose, you might review one of the previous five "Simple Selah" devotions …

Perhaps there is something in one of the devotions that struck a chord in you that you want to revisit.

Holy Spirit knows how to set daily agendas if we let Him.

He knows how to hold our attention if we sit quietly with Him.

He knows how to open our eyes to see the crown upon our King of Glory.

Exodus 16:1-31

“Learning & Admonition”

We have access to the historical record of Israel in the Bible.

The Old Testament houses their story of deliverances, triumphs, and victories

which God wrought for them and through them.

It is also the diary of their failures, consequences, and lessons.

There are two scriptures in the New Testament that speak something

very important about the purpose of preserving and revealing Israel's historical record.

Romans 15:4

For whatever things were written before were written for our learning,

that we through the patience and comfort of the Scripture might have hope.

 1 Corinthians 10:11

Now all these things happened to them as examples,

and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.

In re-reading the above two verses, notice the word "OUR" in each verse.

In Romans 15:4 we read that Israel's story was written for OUR learning.

And in 1 Corinthians 10:11 we read that all that happened and was written is for OUR admonition.

The Greek definitions for "learning" and "admonition" are:

Learning: beyond passive knowledge to active living.

Learning involves instruction, doctrine, functional teaching,

encouragement, wisdom, steadfastness, and hope.

Admonition: a warning and instruction, a shining light to prevent us from stumbling.

The intention is to spotlight Israel's story to prevent us from repeating their failures and sins.

So, what do we do with the historical record we read in our Bible?

The gifted author of the Chronicles of Narnia, C.S. Lewis, encourages us to go

beyond information to an encounter with God and personal transformation.

He emphasized that our Bible should not be read as an encyclopedia that contains mere facts.

"It is Christ Himself, not the Bible, who is the true Word of God. The Bible,

read in the right spirit and with the guidance of good teachers, will bring us to Him."

That is a powerful reason to approach the Bible as a tool of learning and admonition...

that we are "brought to Him."

Psalm 119:105 says that God's Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Why is a lamp and a light needed?

Consider & Respond

We can take heed and be thankful for the Apostle Paul's conclusion

in the two verses that follow 1 Corinthians 10:11.

(vs 11) Now all these things happened to them as examples,

and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.

Let's selah verses 12 and 13:

(vs 12) Therefore, let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.

What attitude does Paul warn us about in verse 12?

Some read this verse as condemnation, as though Paul is lifting a sledgehammer of judgment over our heads.

But what if his warning is based solely on love and concern for the spiritual welfare of his readers?

What if it is a clarion call to us to honestly examine our hearts and repent if we must?

(vs 13) No temptation has overtaken you except is common to man;

but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able,

but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

This scripture is commonly twisted and inaccurately quoted.

How often have we heard someone say that "God will not give us more than we can handle."

This misquote diminishes the core truth of this verse.

Re-read verse 13 and examine the central focus and the promise from God.

Re-Read Exodus 16:1-31.

What lesson or admonition do you glean?

Is there any teaching or warning in this portion of Israel's story

that perhaps you need to heed and live?

Let Us Pray

Lord God, we want to go beyond knowing the truth to living the truth.

Help us to learn from Your beloved people, Israel ... their history and their hope.

Thank You for openly sharing how You have loved them with an everlasting love

and have drawn them with unfailing kindness.

We rest in this ... You love and guide us with Your eye upon us just as You do them.

Amen

Moments in the Bible

Psalm chapter 4

“Practical”

The word “practical” means the actual doing or use of something rather than theory and ideas.

“Practical” is effectiveness in real circumstances.

How important is it that we understand that Creator God is “practical,” that He is aware and effective in real life circumstances?

Some people, including some scientists, do not believe in God. It is not that they do not “believe” in something, just not God.

Some say He cannot be observed so He cannot be proven real and practical.

However, others have used their scientific skills and reasoning to conclude the evidence for God is indisputable.

How do we know that God is practical, that we can follow Him to viable conclusions?

How do we come to believe the evidence for Him is indisputable,

that His words and ways are not just theories?

We will never know if we choose to never observe Him through His recorded actions in the Old and New Testaments,

through the testimonies of those in the Bible and contemporary people, through our own personal experiences.

If we open our ears and hearts to learn from Him in His Word,

if we offer our hands and feet to do what we have read, we can discover He is practical, He is real.

Many have already done so, and some are on the threshold of doing so. It takes a decision.

There is a wonderful line in the animated movie, “David,” currently playing in theatres.

The words inspire a pursuit of the Light of the world. (John 8:12)

“I’d rather take my chances following the light than to choose to live in the dark.”

Let's take the chance of following the light.

We will find the answer to the question, “Is God practical?” if we make a decision to pursue the answer.

Everything is a choice … right? We choose to eat, or not. We choose to learn, or not.

We choose to work, or not. We choose to believe or not.

In most cases for we who live in the western world, we get to choose.

This I’ve learned … if I choose to seek God, He does not hide.

He promises He can be found. (Jeremiah 29:13)

What if we become like scientists who observe, question, and investigate?

They experiment and collect evidence to gain knowledge.

We can proceed with our own experiment

to discover that God is real and practical to our everyday living.

How? By choosing to begin with "Simple Selah," to read and think about God's Word,

but not stopping there! Take the experiment further ... walk it out! Apply what we have read.

Consider & Respond

Let's explore if God and His Word is practical when it comes to

the human experience of anger and frustration.

In a segment of Psalm chapter 4, King David is inspired to write about anger. Many scholars believe David

wrote this Psalm when he was on the run from his son, Absalom, who had betrayed him and marched

against him to overtake his throne. (2 Samuel 15-18)

Perhaps David had learned the lesson about anger in his earlier life when he was

unjustly hunted and driven into exile by King Saul. (1 Samuel chapters 18-31)

Read and apply the steps in Psalm chapter 4, verses 4-5.

As you apply these four steps to deal with an area of anger in your life,

observe (and perhaps journal) how you are helped in a practical way by God and His Word.

The directive: Be angry, and do not sin.  Psalm 4:4a

The practical guidance on how to be angry and sin not.

1) Meditate within your heart on your bed.     Psalm 4:4b

What are we to meditate on? What does God say in His Word about anger and guarding our hearts?

We can meditate on Jesus’ example of truth, mercy, and grace recorded in the New Testament.

2) Be still       Psalm 4:4c

The Hebrew definition of the word “still” is to “be silent, stop, or cease from noise/striving.

It is a call to be quiet internally and to honestly self-reflect.

3) Offer the sacrifices of righteousness     Psalm 4:5a

The previous two steps - meditate and be still - position us to know what God wants us to do.

As we add time in prayer and the Bible, we will receive further direction.

Even if it is a sacrifice to obey, God will cause it to work for our good. (Romans 8:28)

4) And put your trust in the Lord.      Psalm 4:5b

Rely on God, His wisdom, and might to supernaturally and practically work things out,

heal brokenness, restore, or simply sustain us.

How do these four steps reveal to you that God and His Word are practical and real?

Has your experiment given substance to the scripture,

“the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God?” (James 1:20)

Let Us Pray

Lord God, help us grasp this truth: You know firsthand our plight in this human life

and You have provided practical answers to our needs and questions through the Bible and the life of Jesus.

Amen.
